It’s Hurricane Season down here in the South, so what do most people stock up on when a storm is coming?

I asked this question recently, and most of the replies were-
bread, peanut butter, comfort foods, chips, candy, snacks of any kind, water…

Because you never know whether you will have electricity or not, it’s hard to buy a lot of perishable items or fresh foods right before a storm. Even with a generator, it can be difficult to keep a refrigerator or freezer running for as long as it’s needed to prevent spoilage.

So most people cook up the cold and frozen items on a grill or gas stove right away, then you’re left with, ‘now what do I eat?’

Here are some suggestions of things I’ve bought before a storm as healthier items-
Whole wheat bread, whole wheat crackers, brown rice cakes
Peanut butter- a staple! lol
Can veggies- low or no salt- trust me you will want some roughage!
Fresh fruits- like bananas and apples that don’t need to stay cold
Dried fruits like raisins, prunes, and trail mixes- just limit these because they are higher in sugar.
Nuts- almonds, peanuts, etc
Jerky- again just be mindful of salt and limit if you can
Protein and cereal type bars- look for ones lower in sugar
Can fruit- in its own juice, no heavy syrups
Can beans- you can rinse the brine off to make it healthier
Can tuna or chicken for some protein

That’s about all I got! There isn’t a whole lot of options if you won’t have access to a fridge or keeping items cold, but as you can see, there ARE options you can buy that will keep your belly happy and a bit healthier.

You’re already under a lot of stress and disruption from a storm, so if you can choose better foods to put into your body, it will be less stress on your GI system and overall health.  And it will keep your energy up and keep your immune system better intact.

Some of these are not the best or healthiest options, but when in a hurricane, you sometimes have to simply eat when you can find.

Here’s to a safe Hurricane season! And here’s to hoping we don’t have to worry about this any time soon!

Stay safe!
