If you’re heading to a shelter, or ever have to, here’s some things I’ve learned over my years working them…

Shelter info- common sense and tips.
1. It’s not a hotel- don’t expect beds or pillows. Simply be thankful you have a roof over your head.
2. It’s going to be less than clean and sanitary- you have people coming in wet, sick, etc. Simply be thankful you have a bathroom and shower.
3. If you can pack your own meds, food, supplies etc- pack them. Esp meds!! Shelters don’t have prescription meds on hand.
4. Be kind to the staff- they left their families behind and possibly damaged homes too. Everyone is stressed. Be grateful and say thank you.
5. If you’re willing and able- lend a hand to other people in there! People are scared just like you are. Be kind.

I’ve worked these shelters for many storms. I know what they both the staff and the shelterees go through.
I’ve left our house not knowing what I’d come back to.
I’ve left my family in different places, not knowing if they were safe.
The people coming in are scared, they’re nervous, they don’t know what to do either….

It’s stressful and it’s tiresome for everyone. So if you’re heading to a shelter, play nice, be kind, and if you can help others, help them-  especially the elderly and frail people there.

Here’s a to safe Hurricane Season, and NO need for shelters!

Brandy 🙂
