You have a WHAT?

We get this question often! I can’t imagine why…. Haha.
People ask all the time, what kind of dogs are those? Most commonly people think they are labs, weimaraners, or Rhodesian Ridgebacks. But, they are none of the above!

They are Vizslas! Pronounced “Vee-shla”.
They are a dog breed originating in Hungary.

So what made us decide to get this breed? Well, before we got them, we had a Beagle named Daisy who we had for 7 years. Unfortunately Daisy was diagnosed around 3 years old of heart problems and for the rest of her short life, she was on 3 medicines a day and made numerous trips to the vet. When we lost her, we were devastated of course. She was our ‘kid’.

We knew we wanted another dog, but weren’t sure what. So we started doing some research and watching Dogs 101 on Animal Planet. When we first saw the Vizsla, we said yeah they’re cool but no way! They’re too busy!

So a couple weeks later or so, we watched the episode again with the Vizslas. Something about them had our attention. They had qualities that we loved- healthy with no major medical issues, known as a ‘smell good dog’ because they don’t stink, and also known as the ‘Velcro dog’ because they always want to be with you. Now you see why they had our attention!

We knew they’d be busy, and we knew they needed lots of room to run, which we have. So we started talking to some breeders and getting more questions answered. We started realizing just how much went into getting a GOOD puppy from a well established and reputable breeder. We did our homework and found 2 breeders whom we love and respect, Michel Berner of Mira’s Vizslas and Phil and Carole Stout of Windance Vizslas. Without these 3 wonderful people, we would have ended up with a pup from a puppy mill breeder, and probably another dog with medical issues and more heartache.

So we started with one, our female Evie Roux, AKC name Mira’s Ma Belle Evangeline. Yes, she is named after Disney’s Princess and the Frog! We drove all the way up to Illinois, almost to Wisconsin to get her. It was a long but fun road trip. And since we decided Evie Roux needed a sibling, we got another about 10 months later. And that would be Meeko Moux, AKC name Mira’s Mon Beau Chien. And yes we got his name from the racoon on Pocahontas.

Now, just to tell you a little about these 2 ‘goofballs’ as we call them, they are definitely busy! They need to run and exercise about 2 hours at least a day! A bored Vizsla means a chewing, nosy, gets into everything Vizsla! They are so energetic. They love to play in and around our pond, in the backyard, and any open spaces where they have room to run and sniff!

They have their own unique personalities for sure! Evie is sweet when she wants to be and only likes a few people, but she’s getting so much better and more snuggly. Meeko wants to lick everyone to death and loves to snuggle, and he is just a big goofy dog! Together they provide hours of entertainment! And they get along great which is good.

They have certainly kept us busy and moving since we got them, which is good for us as well, good exercise!

Recently we had to put them on ‘diets’ too! We noticed in the summer they got lazy due to the heat and started packing on some belly bulge. So we cut back on dog food and milk bones and a month or so later they both lost 6#! Now this may seem silly, but, dogs are prone to the same medical issues as we are and the extra weight is bad for their joints and hips. So pay attention and be kind to your furry kids too!
