How many times have you weighed yourself, got super frustrated, and wanted to quit working out because ‘I’m not seeing any results!!!’??
How many times are you getting on that blasted scale? And WHY do you keep torturing yourself?
STAY OFF THE SCALE PEOPLE!!!
For many people, it’s just a frustration when you don’t see the numbers moving, you start beating yourself up- you don’t know why you’re doing this, it’s not worth it, and then you quit! Has all that gone through your head?
It has ours. BUT… here’s some things you need to know about the numbers on the scale…
- The average person’s weight can fluctuate anywhere between 1 – 6 lbs per day.
- There is a gradual trade-off as you lose fat and gain muscle.
- Your body can retain water during initial weeks of training.
- Scales do not reflect your body mass and percent of body fat.
What does this all mean? It means that of the different ways to measure progress, the scales are the LEAST accurate measurement of progress. They also can’t tell you all the other things you accomplish such as increased endurance, stamina, more confidence, better energy…
For example, did you know that according to some standards, a man can be 5’8″ and 190 lbs of pure lean muscle (low body fat %) and be considered overweight? That same man can be 190 lbs of “flab” and be overweight. But, who do you think would be considered more healthy and fit by most standards?
Two women who are both 5’8″ and 130 lbs will look VERY different depending on their body fat percent. If one has a body fat measurement of 10% and the other of 40%, there will be a very different look.
Stop thinking weight loss and start thinking “trim up” or “look lean.” As scary a thought this may be for some, take before pictures. You don’t have to share them with anyone, but, months down the road, if you’re tracking nothing else, like measurements (which we HIGHLY recommend), these pics will amaze you when you compare to your after pictures.
The best way to measure progress is a combination of measurements and before/after pics.
SO TOSS THOSE SCALES and let’s make some TRUE progress!
