Just Show Up!

Here we go! 2013 is here and you’ve got your resolutions made and it’s TIME to get stuff DONE! Whoo Hoooo!!!

Then comes February and you look back and say, “ok, starting Monday I’m ready. I’m gonna do this!”

Then comes August. “Ok, as soon as summer’s over and the kids get back to school and I have more time… THEN I’ll FINALLY get things rolling!”

Then comes December… “Man, this year SUCKED!! It’s all good, because NEXT year, I’m starting over and no matter what I’ve got this!”

Rinse and repeat…until you realize your dream has passed you by… or you’ve gained another 30 lbs… or that secret crush you’ve had on that pretty lady or handsome guy has turned into the crushing reality that they’ve moved on.

Why do we do this to ourselves every year while others seem to have all they have dreamed of? They have the perfect life. Their faith is strong. The don’t seem to lack ANYTHING. There are a couple possibilities. One, it’s all a mirage and they are near losing it all or two, as my friend Jimmy Nelson put it…

THEY SHOWED UP!

Every day, they knew what they wanted and pursued it.  Every day, even maybe briefly, they persisted.  Their dreams and goals were important enough to them that they found a way to make it work.  Why?  Because the only way their dreams would come true is if they showed up and fought for them…every day.  They may not have always fought WELL, but, they still fought and got back up no matter how many times they fell down.

Some things do not take 100%, crazy insane, no eat, no sleep, 80 hours a week to accomplish.  In fact, most take only a little time EVERY day.

Consistent persistence is a powerful force.  It gives the power to a small steady stream of water to wear a gorge out of solid rock.

Dreams that are talked about never come true.  Dreams that are pursued can and often do.  We’re not talking about a day here and a day there.  It’s not a pursuit of convenience.  It’s going after it every chance you’ve got.  It’s eliminating obstacles and excuses that are just not important and do not help you accomplish great things.  Maybe it’s less time spent staring at the TV.  Maybe it’s less time sleeping until noon on the weekend.  It could be a little less money spent on things that don’t help you reach your dream.  A little here and a little there add up.

All it takes to fail is nothing.  All it takes to succeed is everything!

With all the talk of New Year’s Resolutions, it can become deceivingly exciting to hear others talk of what they’re GOING to do this year and we often feed off of that idea of a fresh start.  That’s great…feed off of that.  Then DO something about it…every day, until it happens.

Don’t let your lack of motivation on those days you “just don’t feel like it” slow you down.

Trust me, I get that way too and sometimes I just want to throw my hands up and scream, “I QUIT!”  But then I remember why I’m doing it and my family and friends pick me up and remind me how I’ve helped them.
