“And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.” Mark 10:46-52
Something I believe we often miss about this passage is that there isn’t simply one, but, TWO miracles here. It was not ONLY that Bartimaeus received his physical sight when Jesus healed him. Before Jesus healed him, God gave him the “eyes” to “see” Christ and know that he needed Him. Yes, he quite probably heared of Jesus and His miracles prior to His arrival as word spread fast about the works of Christ. However, there were many who heard and yet did not hear…many who saw, but, did not “see.” The Pharisees, for example, saw His miracles yet did not believe. This man simply heard of Him, knew He needed Him, and knew that He COULD heal him. He then called upon the Lord and expressed his need to Him.
May our prayer be that the Lord would grant that our eyes always be open to Who He is and may we give Him the praise and glory as we live for and serve Him and share His love with the lost and dying world around us.
For those who’ve not yet trusted in Jesus Christ as your Savior and submitted your life to His Lordship, I pray that the Lord will open your eyes as well as He did blind Bartimaeus. Perhaps a good place to start is right here. Who Do YOU Say Jesus Is?
