Being overweight is not simply an appearance issue…

It is a SERIOUS potential health issue

Coronary Heart Disease – The leading cause of death in men and women in the United States

Plaque builds in the coronary arteries, creating blockages that restricts the flow of oxygen rich blood to the heart.  If enough of a blockage is formed, blood flow to the heart can even stop… yes, a heart attack which in many cases is fatal.

Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease where the body’s blood sugar level is too high and the body can not produce enough insulin to control it.  It is the leading cause of early death, coronary heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness.

High Blood Pressure

The force of blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps.  If this pressure stays high over time, different types of internal damage can occur.  Chances of high blood pressure increase the more overweight or obese a person is.

Stroke

When an artery ruptures from an increase in plaque buildup, causing a blood clot to form.  If the clot is close to the brain, it can block blood flow and cause a stroke. The risk of stroke increase as in overweight and obese people.

Abnormal Blood Fats

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of abnormal cholesterol… high levels of LDL’s (( BAD type )) and low levels of HDL’s (( GOOD type ))… which increases the risk of coronary heart disease. – High Blood Cholesterol

Cancer

Being overweight or obese can increase the risks of Colon, breast, endometrial, and gallbladder cancers.

Osteoarthritis

Common joint problem of the knees, hips, and lower back caused by excessive weight putting too much pressure on them.

Sleep Apnea – restriction of the air passages around the neck.

Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome – breathing disorder affecting some obese people… can cause death.

Reproductive Problems – can cause infertility in some women

Gallstones

Overweight and Obesity-Related Health Problems in Children and Teens

Overweight and obesity also increase the health risks for children and teens. Type 2 diabetes once was rare in American children, but an increasing number of children are developing the disease.

Also, overweight children are more likely to become overweight or obese as adults, with the same disease risks.
